Author Narayan Gangopadhyay has written the famous story book Bangla Galpa Bichitra. He is well known as a famous Bengali writer. He had an extraordinary and profound knowledge of Bengali literature. He was associated with literature since his student days. In his early life he composed some poems. And it was through this poem that he entered Bengali literature.
During his student days he wrote some short stories, novels and plays. Later his novels, plays etc. were accepted as a significant contribution to Bengali literature. He also had a profound idea in children’s literature and the identity of extraordinary erudition has come to light.
He is well known in Bangladesh as a researcher, story writer, literary man, essayist, critic-writer, writer, playwright and children’s writer. He was born on 4th August 1918 in Baliadangi village of undivided Dinajpur district. Narayan Gangopadhyay is his pseudonym, his real name is Taraknath Gangopadhyay. In most of his works he has published under his pseudonym.
Writer Narayan Gangopadhyay was associated with Bengali literature all his life. He passed MA with honors from Calcutta University and received the Brahmamoyi Gold Medal. He obtained his degree from Calcutta University in 1960. He started his career as a lecturer at Ananda Chandra College. He then taught at Jalpaiguri and City College. In 1956, he was working as a professor at Calcutta University. He died on 6 November 1970 in Calcutta.
Notable among his various works are Upanibes Novel, Samrat O Shrestha, Mantramukhar, Shilalipi, Lalmati, Baitalik, Asidhara, Janmantar Chhuti Akash Khushir Hawa 55 Nehatai Pataldanga Tenida Tenida Abhiyan, Chayatari etc. Needless to say, he introduced profound scholarship in children’s literature. His popular fictional character Tenida has set a shining example in the sky and air of Bengal even today as a unique book for children.
After the publication of his first novel Upanibesh in three volumes, it was widely appreciated and widely read by the Bengali readers. The three volumes of the colonial novel were published in 1942, 1945 and 1946 respectively. In 1946, he received the Ananda Award for his unparalleled skill in Bengali literature and for reaching the pinnacle of success.
His plays Bharate Chai and Agantuk caused quite a stir at that time. Many of his compositions are considered film scripts and many songs have been adopted in films and records. He was a regular contributor to ‘Saturday Letters’ and later wrote under the pseudonym ‘Sunanda’ in the weekly Desh.
The seven authors who have written and discussed in this Bengali story Bichitra are Trailokyanath Mukherjee, Prabhat Kumar Mukherjee, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, Manik Bandyopadhyay, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, Parashuram and Premendra Mitra. This book was published in February 1951.
